Thanks Everyone for coming to our meeting!
Here is a recap of the meeting:
We had 13 attending and Maria Medina, the Executive Director from Denver.

Executive Director Visit

  • Maria talked about current developments in the Spellbinder organization. We have new background checks for new tellers in the future by CBI. (Colorado Bureau of Investigation) We also may need to do follow up background checks in the future to remain current, but that may occur in about 3 years  We also are as organization trying to be consistent in our training of new tellers and a Training Policy update was shared with all trainers in January.
  • Maria also talked about the role of the SRC (Spellbinder Resource Center) and its relationship to chapters. The Council of Trustees oversees all the changes and will be evaluating the membership fees currently under consideration for all Spellbinder tellers. She encouraged our chapter members to submit volunteer of the month nominees and to apply to serve on the Board of Trustees.
  • Recently there has been a bit of tension between professional storytellers and Spellbinder tellers doing larger venues. She shared a “What we do and what we don’t do,” sheet to clarify.

I have enclosed all the documents Maria shared below:

  1. Click on your name at the bottom
  2. Enter the months you have visited the classroom(s) and at the end of the row you enter number of kids in you class. If you are having trouble let me know
  3. You can list your stories as well for future reference, check mine if you like to see where it goes below the yellow rows.

We shared ideas for the last visit to your class, here are a few ideas:

  • Make up a story with your class either by using a Mad Lib approach of fill in the blank (ask for words from class before telling the story) ie something to eat, a kind of animal, a place, a problem…
  • Story bag: put words, pictures or items in a bag and have a student pick out for making a story together
  • Ask kids to give you ideas for a story in April that you then put on sticky notes that you display and create a story using their ideas
  • Have students make or finish sentence as you create a story together; there was once a…. , one day….
  • Meme hands out a storyteller badge
  • I shared a short story; Why Wisdom is Everywhere, an Anansi story which symbolizes why all the listeners in your class have a piece of wisdom (story) to share with others.

I have attached handouts below:
