Calling all grandparents, retirees, grown-up kids, former teachers or librarians! Do you want to learn to tell engaging, fun stories to children in the oral storytelling tradition? Spellbinders is dedicated to restoring the art of oral storytelling to connect elders to youth, weaving together the wisdom of diverse cultures throughout time. To become a Spellbinder in the Steamboat Springs Chapter, interested volunteers must attend a three-day Spellbinders Workshop Series, led by certified Spellbinders Trainers. You will learn to tell stories and then get a chance to tell two stories live to our training group: a 3-5 minute fable and a 5-10 minute folktale. But don’t worry, learning to tell stories in your own words is easy and loads of fun!
The Steamboat Spellbinders Training Workshop is offered annually in August at the Bud Werner Memorial Library. Each session is limited to 10 participants, and will take place in the Library’s Conference Room. Once registered, you can pick up your Training Packets at the Library’s Kids’ Desk so you can read ahead (which will help a lot). This Spellbinders Training Workshop is only offered once a year. The cost is $40.
Once trained, Spellbinder volunteers will have the opportunity to adopt a local elementary classroom to visit once a month (for a minimum of six visits) over the course of the school year. Volunteer Spellbinders are welcome to tell in other organizations that they may be connected with, such as at church, preschools, private schools, or other places that work with kids.
