What is Spellbinders?
Spellbinders is a group of volunteers dedicated to restoring the art of oral storytelling to connect elders to youth, weaving together the wisdom of diverse cultures throughout time. There is a National Spellbinders organization, with headquarters in Aspen, CO. The Steamboat Springs Chapter of Spellbinders was first organized in 2008.
Since ancient times storytellers have told stories to pass on wisdom, engage the imagination and foster community. Our storytelling program recreates this age-old tradition, bringing together young and old to create connections, advance literacy and enrich the lives of children and volunteers alike. Please, join us in our vision of fostering humanity, community and literacy.
How To Get Involved
Do you want to learn to tell engaging, fun stories to children? To become a Spellbinder, interested volunteers must attend a three day Spellbinders Workshop Series, led by trained and certified storytellers. Workshops are offered once a year in August.
Trained Spellbinder volunteers will be assigned a local elementary classroom to visit once a month over the course of the school year. This extremely rewarding volunteer opportunity is a large time commitment, consisting of approximately 8-10 hours per month reading, learning, and telling stories. But it is incredibly worth it!
